A key quality characteristic and unique selling point of Manuka honey is its methylglyoxal (MGO) content. This can only be determined in a laboratory. It should be clearly stated on the label and certified by a laboratory.

As a general rule, you can only be sure that the honey is genuine Manuka honey if the MGO content has been certified by a laboratory and the test report is available for review.

While MGO (methylglyoxal) is a familiar term to those knowledgeable about Manuka honey, users often wonder what the UMF ratings for Manuka honey actually mean. Here is a brief explanation.

The MGO content is a scientific measurement that can be determined in a laboratory. TheUMF™(Unique Manuka Factor)sealis a registered trademark that may only be used by licensees based in New Zealand. While German companies can apply for this seal through a licensing partner, they may do so only if the Manuka honey was also bottled and labeled in New Zealand. Since we bottle and label our honey in Germany, Manuka Valley does not carry the UMF seal. Instead, we specify the MGO content and verify it through independent laboratory analyses.

Market price comparison

Manuka honey is not a mass-produced product and differs from conventional honey due to its high MGO content. It is classified into different MGO grades based on its MGO content. For example, Manuka honey ranges from low MGO levels of 100 mg per kilogram (MGO 100) to maximum levels of 1,200 mg per kilogram. The higher the MGO content, the rarer the Manuka honey. This is why an MGO 800+, for example, is significantly more expensive than an MGO 300+.

Manuka Valley's prices fall within the standard market range for MGO levels between 300+ and 800+. They are neither overpriced nor unusually low. Unusually low prices (often accompanied by very high MGO claims) are usually a sign of counterfeits.
