Who We Are
Meet our founder
For the love of beekeeping
“Manuka Valley is built on three pillars: trust, hard work, and a love of beekeeping. As beekeepers, we work together constantly. We look out for one another, connected in a chain of mutual care. We are a team of people with diverse skills and roles—suppliers, customers, livestock farmers, bees—all coming together.”
Matthew Pettersson, Founder of Manuka Valley
ORIGIN
100% pure kiwi-
-Manuka honey.
Aotearoa—“the land of the long white cloud”—is the inspiration behind our brand. Nestled among the rugged cliffs of the Wairarapa on the North Island, against a backdrop of creamy-white sandy beaches and the deep-blue Pacific Ocean, lie the valleys where our honey comes from. Despite the hilly terrain and the cold east wind, the hardy Manuka plant thrives here, making the area ideal for honey production. Beekeeping offers a very special way to experience the beauty of New Zealand: in summer, the valleys are blanketed with white Manuka blossoms, and if you listen closely, you can hear the soft humming of thousands of honeybees. Can’t get much better than that, ey!

DIRECT TRADE
Good friends,
loyal partners.
Our honey comes from a collective of local, family-run beekeepers in Wairarapa. We work directly with our beekeepers—just us and them. They are good friends and trusted partners; we visit them regularly on their farms, and after a long day in the fields, we enjoy heading out together to the hills or the sea. What unites our team is a deep passion for beekeeping and a responsible, trusting partnership. You could say our company is like a beehive: we work hard together toward a common goal. This close relationship, built on mutual trust, is truly important to us—because it’s the only way we can guarantee quality to our customers and long-term stability for our beekeepers. We reckon that’s a pretty sweet deal.

Say “Kia Ora” to our beekeepers and bees

Matthew
Matthew fell in love with beekeeping right away. “It’s the sensory experience that I love most—the way it stimulates the mind, body, and all the senses at the same time while I’m working. It takes keen observation and an intuitive understanding to connect with the hive.”

Lorn
Lorn is one of the beekeepers at Stu’s small operation. “Basically, we’re just showcasing what nature already has to offer. Our responsibility lies in how we handle the honey—ensuring we don’t contaminate it and that we give it the care it deserves. If you don’t take anything away from the honey, it’s of the highest quality.”

Rooster
"I love working outdoors, exploring the rivers and valleys in my SUV. Our coastal areas are truly special. Since we have our own extraction facility, we handle the honey from the hive all the way to the jar. We’re always eating the honey we make while we work. 'Manuka really is one of a kind.'"

Ian
"Our apiaries are spread throughout the Wairarapa. We take care of everything, from raising new queens to strengthening the colonies so they're ready for a good harvest. Working in these places, surrounded by beautiful nature, is so peaceful and relaxing—how could anyone not be happy in a place like this?"

Stu
Stu is the director of our partner company in New Zealand, Hunter Reilly. His wife, Jan, is a third-generation beekeeper. Together, they manage around 1,000 hives and process honey from smaller, local apiaries in their workshop. With his background in engineering and technology, Stu aims to reinvent beekeeping for the modern age.

Zoe
Zoe is one of our hardworking bees. What she likes most about life as a bee is working with others. “It’s very rewarding work, even if it’s sometimes exhausting.” Zoe loves working outdoors in the fresh air, far away from noise and pollution.
Responsibility
To maintain balance
Nature is our home, our playground, and the very foundation of our lives—protecting it is of the utmost importance to us. Producing Manuka honey means working in harmony with nature’s cycles and taking care to preserve its delicate balance. But it also means transporting the honey over long distances. We therefore see it as our responsibility to take steps to keep our environmental footprint as small as possible. Our jars are designed to be resource-efficient and built to last; they can be returned and refilled through our “Get-a-Refill” system in exchange for a discount. But since they’re also particularly attractive, they can alternatively be reused at home for other supplies. In short: We want to do our part to minimize the environmental impact of our honey production as much as possible, in order to protect our planet for future generations.
